浅析《醒来的女性》中的女权主义

A Brief Analysis of Feminism of  The Women’s Room Outline

The waking woman is a novel published by Marilyn French in 1997. It records the life of Mira, a housewife. It is trivial but heavy. Dozens of women in the book have to regard housework as a career, and have no choice between career and family. What makes the public feel unfair is not only that they are deprived of the right to choose, but also that they are regarded as stupid women who have no merit even though they have sacrificed their right to choose. Most critics at home and abroad study the novel from the aspects of the theme, narrative style and characters. This paper will analyze the novel from the perspective of feminism, which has certain academic research value, which is also the reason for the topic selection of this paper. Firstly, this paper analyzes Marilyn French and her work wake up women are introduced in terms of writing background, main content and the promotion of feminism. Then, from the perspective of family and sociality, the author further analyzes the pressure of the protagonist Mira, and then analyzes the power of female characters with the example of Mira's admission to Harvard University, so as to study the author's feminist attitude.

1.Introduction

Marilyn French(1 929-2009)was a famous feminist author in America.She was not only a best—selling writer but also a leader in the modem feminist movement.French was born in Brooklyn,New York.Her father was an engineer,and her mother was a department store clerk.When she was a child,she did not live in a happy or warm family.Her father was an alcoholic and often hit the children after drunk,but luckily,her mother would try her best to protect her children.Such family atmosphere had a deep influence on French’S literature writing,which included courage and independence of female,of course,also included hopelessness and disappointment towards the patriarchal society.French loved writing since she was a child,and began to write poetry or short stories at the age of ten.In 1 950,when she was at Hofstra University,Marilyn got married and started part-time work to support her husband in law sch001.She had two children,but her marriage was not happy.Influenced by Beauvoir’S Second Sex,Marilyn has insisted on writing and wanted to become a writer.She completed her studies at Hofstra University,earned a bachelor’S degree in philosophy and English literature,then a master’S degree in English.After graduation,she became an English teacher.In 1 964,she was admitted to Harvard University. Because of her husband’S opposition to her writing career,they divorced in 1 967.Marilyn received her Ph.D.in 1 972 and published The Women§Room in 1 977  Despite the public controversy caused by the exposure of many sharp social issues and gender discrimination,this work had sold more than 20 million copies worldwide and published in twenty two languages,which was becoming a phenomenal topic.Some readers said that what was written in this book was the most real life of women at that time.French transformed her identity from a housewife who was regulated by patriarchal rules to a leading and controversial feminist on gender issues who decried the patriarchal society around her.“My goal in life is to change the entire social and economic structure of Western civilization,to make it a feminist world”.she oncedeclared.(Daily Telegraph Obituary:BST 04 May 2009) Marilyn employed her literary works to express the living condition of women.
