An analysis of the violence aesthetics in Quentin Tarantino's films
Abstract: Quentin Tarantino was born in 1963 in America, he is a director, screenwriter, actor and producer. His works have played an important role in the history of violence aesthetics both in Europe and America. This thesis briefly introduces the life and works of Quentin Tarantino, as well as the concept, style and role of violence aesthetics in his movies. And all of that is a profound implications to analyze the aesthetic functions and development prospects of violence aesthetics.

1 Introduction to Quentin Tarantino
1.1 A Brief Introduction to Quentin Tarantino’s Life
Quentin Tarantino is a famous American director, actor and Oscar-winning screenwriter. Influenced by his family, he has been fond of movies since he was very young and he is a real movie buff. Besides, Quentin was also named after a character in a film. Though he had no formal film and television education, Quentin soon became famous in the United States for his ability to write scripts for several successful films after learning how to shoot films by himself.
1.2 A Brief Introduction to Quentin Tarantino’s Works
His first film “Reservoir Dog” which was released in 1992 , was a huge hit at that time. And Quentin's violent aesthetic style was on the horizon. “Pulp Fiction”, which won the Golden Palm at Cannes in 1994, was one of the most important representative works of Quentin Tarantino. These two films established violence aesthetics and black humor as the marks of his creative style. “Kill Bill Vol.1” and “Kill Bill Vol.2” were published in 2003 and 2004 respectively, continuing the violent aesthetic style of “Quincy”. In 2009, “Inglourious Basterds” was nominated for eight awards, including the best picture and best director at the 82nd Academy Awards. In 2013, “Django Unchained” was launched by Quentin after three years of sharpening his sword. It showed the violence aesthetics incisively and vividly, with a deep meaning.
2 The Concept and Development of Violence Aesthetics
2.1 The Concept of Violence Aesthetics
Violence aesthetics is a new form of film art, which originated in the United States, developed in Japan, and flourished in Hong Kong. Its representatives were John woo of Hong Kong, China, Kitano Takeshi of Japan, Oliver Stone of the United States, David lynch, Quentin Tarantino and so on. The most prominent characteristics of violence aesthetics were exaggeration, unconventional violence and the formalized expression of these violent acts. The director expressed the violent side of human nature from the perspective of aesthetics and aesthetic images.
Extreme violence combined with extreme beauty forms a new artistic feeling. Many scholars believe that from the perspective of the social value of the work, the beauty of violence aesthetics has been questioned because of violence aesthetics just show violence, violence works without any judgement. Some works even intentionally or unintentionally remind the audience of the positive role of violence. This form makes the work lose its original social function and makes the film lose moral judgment of action, which is passed on to the audience for them to judge right and wrong. If the balance is undeserved, it will result in opposite effect. For example, the series of “youth and danger” in the 1990s had a negative impact on the young people in Hong Kong at that time, which was not conducive to the development of society and the formation of correct values among young people. However, beauty of violence is still a part of “beauty” from the view of aesthetics, although it is far from the beauty in the traditional sense. Due to the concept of “beauty”, nobody can really completely account for what is pleasing to the eye, so shocking can also be beautiful. Therefore, the author believes that “violence aesthetics” is also a kind of beauty. The two contradictory words “violence” and “aesthetics” have been given new meanings, which is the disappearance of the “subject” of postmodernism in film creation. The film weakens the traditional subject consciousness and focuses on the details and presentation of violence, which is characterized by anti-authority, anti-classic, anti-creation consciousness and anti-elitism.
